Pastel Perfection: Cinque Terre

"Better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times."

It was a dream come true to visit beautiful Cinque Terre, full of perfect pastel buildings and glittering with seaside charm.  Cinque Terre translates to "Five Lands," and there are five different towns/fishing villages that encompass Cinque Terre.

It is said that one of the best parts about visiting here is the hiking trails from town to town; however, when I went with my host family last weekend, the main walkway that we was closed due to significant rainfall the previous week.  However, the other best way to get from town to town is to use the train from Levanto (which we would have used in conjunction with the walking path anyways due to some of the towns being quite far from each other.)  The train runs regularly and makes stops in each of the five towns: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

The first town we stopped at was Vernazza. The best part about town was the pier in which people simply sit, relax, eat, visit, and enjoy. We simply sat on the pier and soaked in the sunshine!

The second town we went to was my absolute favorite: Manarola.  This place is beautiful! The perfect blue water, the abundance of colors, and the cutest shops.  It is as pretty as the postcards make it look! Every view was incredible, but the best one came from hiking up one of the paths to see a panoramic of the city from above.  I could have admired this view allllll day and not tired of the beauty!

Next we went to Riomaggiore, my second favorite.  The colors here were so vibrant!  Annnnd we got gelato here, which of course made it even better!

These three towns were small and so adorable.  Although there are not many things to "do," it's so easy to relax and enjoy il dolce fa niente. We spent approximately an hour or two at each town which was sufficient to get a taste of Cinque Terre, but it would have been easier to spend more time at each destination too.

We stopped briefly at Monterosso on our train ride back to Levanto, but we were not infatuated with this town, as it is more similar to any seaside city and like the other towns Cinque Terre towns we fell in love with.  We did not visit Corniglia, but we were more than happy with our Cinque Terre experience!
