Surprising ourselves for “conquering” the parts of Rome we wanted to in 2 days, we decided to take a day trip on the train to the ancient preserved city of Pompeii!
We were so happy to find beautiful sunny and blue skies when we arrived in Pompeii, even if it only lasted an hour or so. We opted to get a tour guide for our time in Pompeii who showed and told us about some of the highlights.
Pompeii was a large city (encompassing around 170 acres) that was completely covered in ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. It is incredible to see so much of the original city that has been recovered and is still in tact. Roads, houses, shops, theaters, gyms, bath houses, the city forum, mosaics and artwork, and even bodies can be seen.
So incredible to see a of glimpse what life was like so long ago.
